Area Information

Located in southwestern California, Hemet is a bustling mid-size city of nearly 60,000 people. The warm climate of the region and the appeal of nearby lakes have combined to make Hemet a popular retirement destination for nearly half a century. Hemet is served by State Highways 74 and 79.

In the 1960s, large-scale residential development began which gave Hemet a reputation as a working-class retirement area. Ever since that time, the area's affordability, its proximity to employment centers, and its relatively rural character have made it an attractive destination for families that find other areas of southern California too pricey.

Diamond Valley Lake is a great destination to go boating or fishing for largemouth & striped bass, sunfish, catfish and trout.

Just south of the lake is more than 13,500 sq miles of the Southwestern Riverside County Multi-Species Reserve. This site is home to at least 8 types of habitat and up to 16 sensitive animal, plant and bird species for your viewing.

Since 1923, one of the valley's biggest claims to fame has been the annual Ramona Pageant. The incident which inspired Helen Hunt Jackson to write the novel "Ramona" occurred in our valley. As such, the production of a pageant based on the story was discussed for a number of years as a method of promoting the valley. From 1923 onward, the people of Hemet and San Jacinto have joined to stage "the world's largest outdoor play" nearly every spring.
